Genetics: Medicine’s Next Frontier

July 14th, 2019

In 2005, a wild eyed, young, enthusiastic and impressionable student (myself) sat in on a genetics lecture in his first year of medical school in which the professor promised that clinical genetics would be the next frontier of medicine.  While he may have been slightly optimistic, it appears that the time for medical genetics has finally arrived.  With the advent of affordable whole genome sequencing and clever marketing, companies such as 23 And Me have become mainstream.  The largest databases and repositories of genetic information ever are being built.  Genetic therapeutics are becoming more common and are more successful.  Slowly, it appears, the time for genetics is now!
